8:  What causes bad decisions and how can you avoid making them

All people sometimes make bad decisions. Some my claim that there is no reason or correlation between the bad decision and some other factor; that bad decisions “just happen”. If assuming that good decisions are those leading to efficiency and bad decisions are directly related to inefficiency. I believe that finding a way to continuously make good decisions, thus is one core aspect of being efficient.

The problem is that we do all make bad decisions. As bad decisions are made, the focus is shifted from the right things, to irrelevant things. So why do bad decision occur? I believe that bad decisions come from situations and times when we don’t feel well, from times when we are in a bad state of mind.

So how do we avoid making bad decision? It is simple. Don’t make decisions when you don’t fell really good. So when your boss, wife, friend ore parent comes to you and need you to make a decision about something really important, you simply say “sorry I don’t fell good right know so it has to wait…”. Well, I guess that’s not always possible.

It is of course impossible to always fell great when you make decisions. Therefore, my advice to become more efficient in terms of decision making, is to try to as often as I can make my decisions when I feel good.

7:  Flexibility in planning is important when unexpected things come up

For about two months ago I moved into a new apartment. Since then I have had a lot to do within my new home and I still have many objects on my to-do-list. There are a few things I have been waiting for to fix since I moved in and today one of these finally could get solved. However, yesterday I planned to read a specified number of pages in one of my schoolbooks but this was not compatible with fixing in my new home. When this came up I had to change my plans and of course prioritise my home.

Obviously I did not managed to read all the pages I had planned for but I have still had focus on getting the most important tasks done. If you compare my schedule for today with what I planned yesterday they do not match and I have not reached my goals. On the other hand the outcome of this day was better than I had planned since I am now further on with getting my apartment in order.

It is important that you do not get stuck in your plans. When more important things come up it is vital to be flexible. By being flexible and capable of doing the correct prioritisation you can be highly efficient even if you do not reach the goals you have set up.

6:  A source of being efficient is flexibility

The recent week has been stressful and occupied by group projects, a lot of work, tasks to undertake for my upcoming exchange to Canada.

I wrote an article before about how I felt I was more efficient if I had a lot of things to do.  At the moment, I feel that the resolution has to be modified a bit.

Being a student, I most often have lots flexibility to choice how I want to use the time available. I have the opportunity to choice when I want to exercise, work and do group projects. But as mentioned, these activities have occupied all my days and my preaction has therefore been difficult to do. Just having one activity to undertake from morning until evening makes planning wasteful. When you loose all the flexibility, planning is not as efficient as when you can move your activities as you prefer. Therefore, a source of being efficient is not to having a day full of commitments, it is having flexibility to plan your days. And some days are hard to plan, if they include a day full of work.
